Food for Thought

The back part of the ear . . . not exactly the first place you look when it comes to earrings. But why does it have to be that way? We’re certain we are not the only ones who have pondered about that theory so how come no new designs have been made over the past years if not decades? To give you an idea of what we’re talking about here’s just a handful of some concerns:

• Lost an earring back on one of your favorite pair of earrings and stopped wearing those earrings because of the earring back
• Unable to wear the earrings because the earring back triggers an allergic reaction
• Is there anything different I can do with the back part of my ear?
• Afraid of losing your favorite pair of earrings because of the earring back?
• Color coordinate the front part of the earring with the earring back
•Is there a better design which is also more elegant than the current “Clutch-type” earring back?
• Embarrassed to show the back part of your ear because it's too plain or there's nothing to show at all?

So . . . why does my earring keep falling off?

Let’s focus on the current clutch type earring back. The current popular clip-on earring back is functional and does what it’s suppose to do but let’s look at its downfalls: Here’s what’s happening every time the earring pin is inserted through the earring back . . . Grinding metal on metal will eventually wear the two pieces out. In this case, the earring post and earring back. It will take a while for the earring to become loose but it is a matter of time.

The center of the Angel Catch is made out of polyurethane. The flexibility in polyurethane allows the material to bend and shape itself according to the earring pin diameter. The final result is a very tight fitting of the earring pin and back. The same cannot be said about traditional silver or earring backs. Metals such as gold or silver are very limited in flexibility compared to polyurethane. So even if the earring pin is a little wide in diameter, the earring back will not work with the earring. And if the earring pin diameter is too thin then the earring fitting will be loose.

Why is it my ears become sore or infected after I use my earrings?

Traditional earring backs are made out of gold or silver which in many cases contain other materials or chemicals causing the allergic reactions when in contact with human skin. A person may simply be allergic to the materials used in the earring or there may be a corrosive metal used in the earring back. In a case where the metal earring back is corroding or rusting, the corroded particles may enter a pierced skin area and infect the skin.

Another known cause for infection is the nickel used in many types of earring backs. The nickel itself does not cause the infection, but when nickel comes into contact with sweat or water corrosion will occur. The corroded material then comes into contact with the pierced skin area and . . . TADAAH!!! Instant skin infection.

Angel Catch is made of 100% titanium and medical grade polyurethane. The titanium will not corrode and polyurethane will not trigger allergies. Only the finest materials are used to create the most elegant earring back ever made.
